Day 2 Fund Lagoon
Winding your way around tiny coral islands past mangrove
forest and across tropical lagoons, this will be your
first glimpse of the paradise that will be your home.
The area is remote, exotic, unspoiled, peacefully and
incredibly beautiful. More importantly though it is only

recognized as some of the best in the world;
Overnight find lagoon moorings.
Day3/4 Fundu Lagoon

Njao gap: south
Visibility is from 30-40m and the top the reef is at 20m in the north and 12m in the south, dropping off steeply. This steep wall offers huge overhangs and large gorgonian sea fans. Marine life is often seen to include eels, giant groupers turtles, napoleon wrasse and numerous smaller fish.
Manta point
A coral pinnacle reaching up from 40m to within 8m of
the surface situated just outside the mouth of fund gap,
is one of the best sites in the world for close
encounters with the giant manta rays. With visibility
from20-40 rays can be seen in groups of up to 25. The
best time to see them is usually early in the morning or
late afternoon. The pinnacle is also covered in
beautiful dense corals and drops dramatically on its
Western side. The abundance of fish on this reef makes
it a superb dive. One of the best with or without be

6 - 40m, making it good for snorkeling. This is a fun
site to drive with large overhangs, swim- through and
brilliant coral forming the sheer fall. There is a good
variety of large and small fish including kingfish,
jacks, barracuda, napoleons, hump head parrotfish moray
eels and stonefish.

Early morning deep dive before breakfast at Mafia reef.
Late breakfast followed by another dive. Beach walk on
Misali Island followed by a dive on west side of Misali
Island. The calm waters here give rise to visibility up
to 60m and the clarity of the water can make the huge
depths deceiving. The reef starts at only 5m and the
steep walls plummet down beyond 600m. The coral is
superb, the water is breathtakingly clear and the
numerous large fish make this site a divers dream.
Misali Island
Allegedly a hideout of the legendary pirate Captain
Kidd, who is said to have left buried treasure here in
1684 the Island has an idyllic beach and is famed for
the quality of its diving. It is claimed that 40 of the
60 coral genera are represented, along with around d240
different species of fish. Misali Island in particular
is also an important nesting site for marine turtles in
the Zanzibar archipelago, with both green and hawk bill
turtles using the area. The waters are also used by
species of dolphins, (bottlenose and humpbacked) and
large marine mammals such as whales are also found
within the water surrounding Mesali.
Emerald Reef.
The average visibility on this reef is a gentle slope
from 7 - 30m where many large brown marbled grouper are
found. Most varieties of fish life are found between 20
- 25m with damselfish, Goldies and fusiliers. The
highlight of the reef though is the abundance
of large fish especially the shoals of barracuda, wrasse and cruising sharks - on occasion hammerhead sharks have been seen.
Makerere reef:
An interesting undulating reef set on a sandy slope on
Misali's Southwestern edge. A series of coral hillocks
extend from the top of the reef at 8 - 10 depth to the
bottom at more than 30m. The corals are home to torpedo
rays, moray eels and lobsters along with many reef fish
while the large spotted eagle rays. This area is in
dolphin territory and you can often hear a pod of
friendly spinners nearby.
Misali Coral Garden - Razorback Reef.
The coral garden runs North - South mainly conducted as
drift dive. It consists of a multitude of different
corals all in extremely good condition. At its southern
most points turtles can be sighted here. The Razorback
Reef and a further deep reef for experienced divers can
be included on this dive. The inside faces of razorback
reaches 30m while the outside face reaches 40m. Here is
an excellent fish life all around this reef. The deep
reef can be looked at from the top at 45m from the
Mountain.
Misali Coral Mountain
Rose coral dominates this beautiful mountainous site to
which are attracted some unusual fish such as the leaf
fish. Octopus and lobsters can be seen in this area. The
depths reach 80m. Many other game fish such as dog tooth
tuna, rainbow runner and trevally hunt on the mountain
and the blue striped fusiliers abound.
Day 9: Kingoji Bay
Morning dives on Mesali Island. Afternoon sail to Kingoji bay beach barbeque on Kingoji bay beach.
Day 10: Panza Wreek
Water-ski lies in water of 3-10m and is exposed at low
tide. It looks like an old steamer and the clarity of
the water added to abundant marine life makes this a
good photographic site and in calm waters is also makes
an interesting night dive. This 100m long Greek
freighter called the paraportiani which sunk in 1969
lying on an inside passage between the outer and inner
reefs. It can only dive on a slack low or a slack high.
Frequent strong currents present. Best visibility on a
slack high when there is always a mild current present.
The stern, which is intact, lies at a depth of 7-9m
while the bow lies in 12-14m. A large helm is still in
place. A great variety of fish, with hundreds of
glassfish, a resident juvenile napoleon wrasse, abundant
unicorn fish of different types lionfish and trivially
as well as other diverse marine life such as crabs,
nudibranchs, sponges and corals.
Day 11-13: Mtangani and Mchengazi
Diving and explore the creek by tender, sundowners and
overnight at Mtangani.Diving on the East coast of Pemba
exposed and unprotected from the open Indian Ocean is
great for good predator experiences. With a good chance
of encountering hammerhead sharks, large shoals of
barracuda, trevally, kingfish and dog toothed tuna up to
two meters in length, these dives will be as exciting as
the others will be colorful, In between dives take the
tender out and explore the creeks, channels and mangrove
forest.
Day 14: leave from Pemba by flight or ferry to Zanzibar.
Other Islands
There are many tiny islets dotted along the coast of
Pemba, most of which have nothing at all on them. Some
of these Islands make for interesting excursions
including the tiny fishing Islands offshore from Tumbe
village like Mtambwe Mkuu Island and Kojani Island.
Getting to Pemba
By Air
Pemba can be reached by
air either from Unguja (Zanzibar Island) or from
Mainland Cities of Dar es Salaam or Tanga. Local air
charter companies run daily flights most days of the
week. If you are in a group, it may prove cheaper per
person to charter a flight privately through one of the
companies. Alternatively, these same companies often
have spare seats on certain US$50 and US% 100. Flights
from Dar es Salaam inevitably go via Zanzibar and may
also involve a change of plane. There is also a direct
flight between Tanga and Pemba, which is slightly
cheaper at around US$60. The airport tax for flights out
of Pemba is US$2.50 per person and is also payable in
local currency as per exchange rate.
By Sea
By Ship
Nearly all passenger ship coming into Pemba arrive at
the town of Mkoan, on the southwestern and of Pemba
Island. Very few ships or dhows actually make use of
Chake Chake as point of destination or departure as the
old harbor is silted up and only canoes can actually
hail entrance! The town's actual port is now at Wesha,
10km west along the coast. The journey, by ship between
Zanzibar and Pemba can take between 3 and 6 hours
depending on the company used and prices very between
US$10 and US$35 excluding port tax.
By Dhow
Most of the dhow traffic to/from Pemba is between Tanga
on the Mainland. There is very little if any dhow
traffic between Zanzibar and Pemba, and those that do
travel arrive in Mkoani. This is mostly due to the fact
that it is illegal for tourists to travel to Pemba from
Zanzibar via dhow. Dhow trips are available from Tanga
but service is erratic. They arrive mostly in Mkoani or
Wete and run around US$15.
